  1. SAT for dummies

  2. The Barrons Math Workbook for the New SAT is a good one. It gives you sections arranged by all the hot topics in the SAT math section and then it gives you a practice set for every section and full length tests at the end. What I love about this book is that it's challenging so you can be extra prepared on the day of the test.

  3. I used a book that I got in my Princeton Review class.  It had 11 practice SAT tests in it plus all of the answers (and their explanations).  I took most of the math sections in these tests, and all the practice really helped -- it upped my Math score 180 points.  The teacher for my Princeton Review class helped a little too: she gave tips (like you don't ever really need to use trigonometry) and helpful formulas (like the distance and midpoint formulas).  But mainly it was the practice tests, so that's what I suggest -- practice a lot, study what you got wrong until you know how to do it right, and you should improve your score a lot.

There are some tricks too, like if the problem has variables in it.  Plug in a number for the variable and solve the problem.  Then look at the answers, plug in the variable for them, and see which answer matches up with the problem.  This really helped me cut down on time when I was taking the SATs.

For problems that have variables in the problem, but not in the solution -- plug in answer C from the solution.  If it doesn't work, then you will be able to eliminate either A and B (which are smaller than answer C) or D and E (which are larger than answer C).

There was another book from the Princeton Review (I think it was Cracking the SAT) that told you helpful tips like this, and also had charts in the beginning.  These charts showed you how many problems you had to answer right in order to get the grade you wanted.  This also helped me, especially the charts.  I knew I had to answer around 46 Math problems right in total to get the score I was shooting for, so I would take the practice tests in my other book and add up my score to see how I was doing.  But I think the practice tests were what REALLY upped my score, in my opinion.  When I went in to take the SATs, I knew exactly what was coming and was prepared for most of it.

Hope that helped a little!  Good luck in October!  As long as you work hard (review slope, other geometry and algebra concepts) and study, your grade will have to go up.  (and also, there's an 'experimental' section on the SAT that can be a math section.  This doesn't count towards your grade, it's only there for research purposes.  I knew there was one when I took the SATs because there were four math sections when there should have only been three -- there were two fill-in-the-blank sections instead of one, and two normal sections.  And one section was really hard!  So if you get four math sections and one is more difficult...then that could be the experimental section, so don't worry about it)
