  1. nothing.. its just a story from Plato of a perfect society.

  2. Best evidence from Egyptian records suggest that the Greek Island of Santorini probably most closely fits the description.

The moral implications of the Atlantis story (the danger of hubris, etc) are literary devices used to make a social or political point to the listeners.  The story itself, however, was probably based on real events which took place centuries before the Platonic accounts of it.

Atlantis' destruction "in a single day and a night"  was described by early Greek writers, most notably Plato.  On Santorini, the civilization was decimated in a single 24 hour period by a gigantic earthquake and the resultant tsunami.

This civilization was greatly advanced over its neighbors--Syrian, Egyptian, etc. The inhabitants of Santorini lived in six and seven story buildings, had hot and cold running water (the wealthy), and many innovations that other Euro-Mediterranean societies didn't achieve for four or five centuries.  Many of these advanced technologies and scientific/engineering marvels must have seemed like magic to less-educated observers.

Look up the Atlantis myths, then look up Santorini.  The similarities are astonishing, and the Egyptian records of trade with the Minoan civilization (which is where Plato got his account of Atlantis) seem to match Santorini to the Atlantis story.

  3. Yes. Los Atlantes de Tula in Mexico.

  4. Nope.  Sorry.  Although theories and speculation abound, there is yet to be one piece of physical evidence to prove its existence.

  5. nothing solid, yet
