Question:

Is there any harm in introducing my son to whole milk a couple weeks before his one year check-up?

I'm just about finished w/ a can of his formula and I'd rather not buy another one if I can just buy a jug of milk instead. He'll be a year in a couple weeks and has never shown any allergy to whole milk yogurt or pasturized cheese. Do I have the okay or should I just wait for his appointment?

  1. My niece was given milk, in small portions from age 8 months. Obviously she still got her formula meals but drank milk occasionally with a meal. Now she is 11 months old, down to one formula meal a day, with solids and milk or water with meals. She started at exactly 11 months with this routine. By the end of this month the last formula meal will be gone, so I don't think you have anything to worry about, as long as the diet is varied and nutritious.

  2. i think u should wait if u don't want 2 buy a big can of formula buy a small 1 u should not feed whole milk 2 baby less then a year old the cheese and yogurt don't have enough milk 2 CZ an allergy but you never know about whole milk there's a saying IT BETTER TO PREVENT THEN 2 SAY SORRY......... but why say sorry when u can prevent it

  3. I weaned my daughter from breast milk to whole milk at 11 months. My pediatrician said it was ok to do it.

  4. YOU CAN GIVE YOUR CHILD WHOLE MILK NOW  I DID WHEN MY SON WAS 6 MONTHS OLD BECAUSE HE WAS NOT GAINING WEIGHT AND HE IF FINE AND IS NOW ALMOST 4 YEARS OLD

  5. Their is nothing wrong with that. That is what I did. You might want to buy another one though. I was told by the doctor to wean them off of formula. Start with two ounces of milk and the rest formula. He said it is because they could have a low tolerance for milk and it is better to give them a little at a time.

  6. I gave all my kids whole milk at 9 months and the Dr was fine with it.

  7. i also started my son on whole milk around 11 months, and he did just fine.

you should always check with his doctor when making any changes though, just to be on the safe side.

  8. The purpose for waiting until your child is 1 before giving them whole milk, nuts and other foods is to allow them time to build their immune system strong enough to consime and digest harsher products such as milk.

Also it is important that your child has a balnaced diet of solid foods with the neccessary vitamins before taking them off formula and giving them whole milk.

If your child eats well, has no lactose intolerance and seems to be healthy, go ahead and introduce whole milk during the day. As with all new foods give your child a small portion and wait to insure there are no adverse reactions. Switching to whole milk, nuts, fish and seafood all take time, so you may need another can of formula anyway.

I guess I ran rather long with this one, but in conclusion, go ahead and begin introducing whole milk, by the time your child sees the Ped you will either be able to take your child off formula completely or you may have a concerns regarding the milk to ask their Dr. which is better then going twice in one week.

  9. No problem at all.  We did the same.

  10. Just call his ped and ask them over the phone..it should be fine..My daughter started a few weeks early but i def.. would talk to your ped first

  11. This happened to me too! My can was almost done and I felt no need to waste money to buy another so I just started him on the milk. I never consulted with my pediatrician because we were talking over a span of like 3 wks. Everything turned out fine for us. My son took the milk quite well. If I may suggest, do NOT heat up the milk or he’ll start adjusting to warm milk and you’ll get him in routine with that. And you’ll regret it later, trust me on this one.

Of course you can always consult with your pedi to make you more comfortable. But this won’t harm the child unless there is some sort of milk allergy. Which you most likely would have discovered in using formula anyways.

    Good luck!

  12. We started giving my son whole milk 2 weeks before he turned one.  I breastfed exclusively and then he weaned himself 2 weeks before his first birthday and I just didn't want to give him formula.  I called the doctor and she gave me the go ahead to give him whole milk.  Maybe give your doctor a call and see what he/she says, but I don't think 2 weeks would make a huge difference. :o)

  13. I started my son on whole milk at 10 months b/c he jus went off his baby milk and it wasn't satisfying him enough, im sure its perfectly fine 2 give it 2 ur son.
