Question:

Is there any laid back coffee shops in NYC where I could lounge and study for a few hours?

I am looking for a coffee shop preferable in Manhattan where I can lounge and read books for a couple of hours over a cup of coffee.

Everything I've been finding so far has wooden chairs and tables with this quick drink and go environment. I haven't found anything with couches or where lounging is encouraged. Any ideas?

  1. Well, as you know if you live in Manhattan, there are Starbucks everywhere, especially in the tourist area. However, if you want something more secluded, you could try going to Morningside Heights. It's a small area of Manhattan that has lots of small cafes that are great to study in because it's home to lots of universities, including Columbia and Barnard College. I think this is a pretty safe bet for you. I hope you like it!

  2. I don't know if this is helpful, but if you want a chill environment I suggest a good tea shop instead. Coffee drinkers are just too jacked in NYC, haha. The tea shops have more chill people on their Macs. Cliche, but at least they're not obnoxious. The West Village has some excellent ones, like Tea & Sympathy.

If you're dead-set on coffee, I would definitely go to an independently-owned shop. Maybe that would be better than the typical Starbucks/Dean & Deluca.

In my sources I included a list of NYC tea rooms and a map of  independently-owned coffee shops (you need to search under NY, NY). Hope this helps!

  3. There's one on every corner...

    STARBUCS!

Just dont go to one, RIGHT in the middle of town.
