Is there any material that is invisible to infrared sensors? Or device that renders the sensors useless?

Is there any material that can render infrared sensors, ie simple household driverway lights, useless, ie through clothing or other material.

Or is there any device I can purchase as a civilian that prevents these sensors from operating?

  1. If there is, it's sheen must be flat instead of glossy, so that it doesn't reflect any incident IR.

    It must also be at the same temperature as the ambient, to avoid producing or absorbing any photons.


  2. If you know where the sensor is, shining a bright light directly into a sensor will usually render it useless.  Another device that works quite well, and you can purchase readily, is a hammer.

  3. Mythbusters investigated this. An ordinary sheet of glass is opaque to infra red, and effectively disables this kind of sensor. You just hang it over the sensor using a long pole, and Bob's your uncle. Be sure that the glass is at ambient temperature, of course.

  4. The sensors you are talking about are PIR sensors

    They view a field (area) and integrate (average) the temperature over that field. When any object comes into the field that has a different temperature that new temperature is now averaged with the remaining field. It would be very difficult to always look like the same temperature as the area that you are hiding as you moved through the field.

    You could try projecting a temperature beam onto the sensor the would effectively blind the sensor to the rest of the field. like shining a flashlight in your eyes. when you did that it would initially set off the sensor but the sensor would see no further changes even if you walked through the field with your pet elephant.

    Remember I get 25% of whatever you are going to steal!

  5. Anything that is at the same temperature as the ambient will not be seen by an IR sensor.
