If so, how accurate is it (within a radius of how many miles)?

  1. They can trace a cell phone to the nearest cell tower.  If the cell phone moves they can get the direction from the next cell tower.  One cell tower can be good for tracing within maybe 300 meters.

    Some phones have GPS and that is good within a few feet of location.


  2. New cell phones have GPS.  They can identify their location.  With some cell plans, you can use the GPS yourself too.

  3. In some cases (e.g. when hunting for a "undesired person"), triangulation is used, that means 3 cell towers lock-on to the cell phone signal at the same time, and together, they can determine the phone location within 10 meters.
