I suppose Wikipedia is your best bet for gaining information. Just don't use it in essays.

Not sure about being able to read books online about history, but you can always go to Wikipedia.org which will tell you basically everything about anything. Also, Google has some type of thing online where you can preview books. You can read somewhere around 100 or more pages of the book depend upon the book.

Subject is pretty broad...you might have a better chance at finding books about particular events or societies in history.
