  1. Yep, 'cept it isn't called 'online homeschooling' in Australia; you need to look for 'distance education'.

Legally, however, there's no such thing as 'online homeschooling' in Australia: 'Enrolment in Distance Education is in effect enrolment in a school...Students enrolled in Distance Education are not eligible for registration in Home Education' (from the NSW Board of Studies' website).

The only private online distance-ed provider I know of in NSW ('great' or otherwise, *smile*) is: http://www.acc.nsw.edu.au/de/welcome/

By going with them you could still study 'at home' but officially you'd still be at a private school (ACC), rather than a home-educated kid. Okay, according to ACC's website, they are currently the *ONLY* non-government online school in NSW.

There are government online schools in NSW (Sydney Distance-ed High School, NSW Distance-ed High School); however, enrollment in them is restricted to:

    >students living in remote areas

    >students travelling within Australia

    >students temporarily resident or travelling overseas

    >students with medical conditions

    >students with behavioural, conduct or emotional disorders

    >students who are pregnant, young parents, fulltime carers

    >students in hospital or juvie

    >students with other commitments (sports etc) that 'prevent regular occurrence at a day school'

Anyway if you/your parents are serious and reckon you fall into one of those categories, further details about online schooling are available from the Distance Education Support Unit:

    •Primary (02) 9568 9888

    •Secondary (02) 9581 0255

Providing you're 15 or older and already have your School Certificate, you could also study a 'limited number' of HSC courses through OTEN-DE. However, you would 'not be eligible for the Higher School Certificate or Record of Achievement but are eligible for a Higher School Certificate Results Notice.' (NSW Board of Studies' website)

As for overseas schools, well, hmm; unless you're an ex-pat temporarily living in Oz & planning to go back to your own country in the future, you'd have to consider how useful (or not) ending up with an overseas issued qualification that is not recognised in Australia is really likely to be to you in terms of your future: Uni, jobs, VET, TAFE etc.

It's possible to go with an overseas school BUT, if you are Australian and plan to live, work and grow old here in Oz, you/your parents'd need to be very careful before you sign anything or pay anything that you don't inadvertently 'disinherit' yourself from the benefits available to you as an Aussie that are inherent in the Aussie system by doing so!

Also if you wanted to go the 'overseas-based' online school track, you should probably go into it with some awareness of how the two country's educational systems compare -- all qualifications are equal but some are more equal than others, that sort of thing. I know people who've done university degrees overseas only to find out later that, here in Oz, their degrees really aren't worth the paper they're printed on (and certainly aren't worth the heaps of $$$$'s they spent getting them!) because no official body will recognise their degrees as such.

Oh and if you/your parents are after more info about the options for alternative education, try Sydney Home Education Network: http://www.shen.org.au

  2. you might want to check out time4learning...they have a lot of international students signed up

  3. I do not know of any online homeschooling in Sydney. That being said, as far as I know, there is no reason why the school would need to be in Sydney. After all, that is the big advantage to using an online high school.
