  1. To mix it up a little serve fried fallafel in a pita with lettuce and a cucumber sauce.

  2. I bake my falafels.  They definitely don't have the same texture as the fried version, but the taste is still there.

    Baked Falafel

    2 cups chickpeas

    1 large onion, chopped

    5 cloves garlic, crushed

    1/2 cup chopped parsley

    1 large egg

    1/4 tsp. salt

    1/4 tsp. black pepper

    1 tsp baking soda

    1 tsp ground coriander

    1 tsp ground cumin

    1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper

1 whole wheat pita torn into pieces

Pulse all ingredients together in food processor. Form into patties.. Place on a non stick cookie sheet and bake at 350º F for 15-20 minutes.

  3. They can be baked, sure, but the texture won't be quite the same. I usually find that baking makes falafels extremely hard and dry, no matter what shape you make them. Deep-frying preserves the moisture of the bean mix much better.

As for other ways to eat falafels, why not try putting a few in a salad instead of a pita? I like to eat them this way sometimes.

  4. They can be baked, but the texture isn't nearly as good.  They tend to be dryer, and more crumbly.

I recommend just pan frying them in either olive or grape-seed oil, both of which are good for you.

I personallly like deep-frying best, too.  Nothing beats the taste of deep frying.  I am from the south, though, where we like to deep fry EVERYTHING!

  5. I pan fry mine 2-3 minutes, until golden, then I finish in the oven for about 15 minutes.
