  1. Yes there is.

Spybot Search & Destroy is really good

    http://www.safer-networking.org/en/home/...

Ad-Aware is also very nice (it has upgrades but the main program is free)

    http://www.lavasoft.com/

I'm sure there are others, but I personally use these.

  2. I would use Spyware Terminator.  It's free and really good.  It got everything off my computer and is ranked as one of the best.

Add :  Those other programs listed below are good but trust me.  I've put in the research time you won't be able to do better for free.

  3. The pitch from some companies claiming to fix your computer with their program is to scan and report spyware, some even if your PC is clean. It's to scare you into buying their stuff.  The recommendation for SpywareTerminator sounds good- like the guy actually used it and can tell his experience. I would try it. I would remove the other programs that do nothing to clean up. I use Spybot Search and Destroy. I like it. It removed a lot of stuff the first use and I haven't gotten infected like that again.

ccleaner is a good program for cleaning out useless files, removing unwanted programs and fixing registry issues, and it's free.

I like AVG anti virus. It is a free antivirus program whihc updates daily, or even as often as every 4 hours.

      removespyware

  5. You can download AVG for free and it has free updates. There is an option to buy, but you don't have to select that either. Other free spyware detection sites include Ad Watch and Ad Aware. Hope these help, but sometimes your computer will just warn you that you "may" have spyware on your computer. Never download a program that you're not familiar with.
