  1. Combine your picnic with a day out at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. This is one of the longest preserved steam railways in the country, and you can drop off at one of the stations en route and pick your own spot for miles around (only don't start a fire....). A place called Goathland is a favourite spot for walkers and you can always go to the village they use to film "Heartbeat". The Whitby end of the line starts from GROSMONT and goes right over the moors to Pickering. I've spent many a happy time up there.

  2. What about Whitby Abbey with great views of the sea, alhtough I think you have to pay to get in? Try the website:http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/serve...

Also you could go to Lilla Cross, high on the moors between Whitby and Hackness.

Try the Whitby Toursit Information Centre: http://www.queensland.co.uk/abbey.html

    Hope this helps.

  3. yes the north yorkshire moors national park.i used to love going up to chop gate on the cleveland hills...enjoy

  4. Look for Dalby Forest if you haven't heard of it already. It is near Hole of Horcome and it is absolutely out of this world. I love Whitby and the surrounding area, I'm up there whenever I can, you should find it on the net if you look for it,

    I found the e-mail address.

    www.forestry.gov.uk/dalby forest

    Try it and Good Luck...
