Is there any point in buying a pre-built Acer computer and adding a 9800 GTX graphics card, or will the motherboard slow down the card?

Would it be better to make a computer myself, with a better motherboard, but a lesser card? or is the Acer fine?

  1. the slot types are standard. as long as its a pci-e 2.0 slot there wont be any slowing of the transfer rate between the card and the cpu. The only othger variable is that the power supply is adequate to run a card of that size. If not you will have to factor the cost of the powersuppply into the upgrade.

The 4850 is a much better card than the 9800gtx, by the way and is a lot cheaper.

Also, nvidia is having a lot of trouble with its boards aty the moment and is doing massive recalls on a lot of its video cards.

As far as the rest of the acer goes, that really depends on what the other hardware is thats on it. If its a gaming pc then a decent cpu and plenty of (preferably fast) ram is important.

In terms of cost, you pay a huge premium for a name brand computer like acer. You could build something much more powerful for the same price.

If you are not confident to put it together yourself, places like http://www.ibuypower.com will let you select the parts and will assemble it for you.
