I'm from Scandinavia but have lived here for eight years and want to stay, so should I apply for citizenship? Will it make any difference to me whatsoever?

  1. I suppose it would be extra paperwork and you'd be out of the pocket a few extra pounds other than that I don't see much of a point unless you want to become British and naturalize and pass this citizenship down to your children.

  2. Very little. About the only thing you can't do is vote but I know an American who has been in the UK a while and somehow gets sent voting cards so that doesn't appear to be a problem either.

  3. I've been wondering the same thing. Been here for more than 10 years (from Canada) and don't know if I should do it either. Does it bother anyone out there if we do it? Sorry for stealing your question, LionA.

  4. Any citizenship bestows a degree of protection on the recipient.  At the same time, there is a concomitant degree of responsibility of the new citizen to the new country.  Just once I would like to hear someone ask how he/she could provide a benefit to the country that provides the citizenship....

Note:  I was responding to your original question, not your unknown particulars.

  5. weigh what you gain by opting for Brit, and decide.

Instead you can have dual citizenship.

  6. If you have never had any problems with your Scandinavian passport before why bother? I doubt the UK passport will offer you any additional benefits.

  7. one benefit of being a citizen...you cant be deported.  most often, countries reserve the right to deport immigrants, especially if they have committed any crimes.  As a citizen, they can never deport you.
