I have to say that there are a lot of explanations that are plausible, include a Japanese fire balloon, sky lanterns, a zeppelin/blimp, a weather balloon, or even an early helicopter.

The object took 20 minutes to move from Santa Monica to Long Beach, which is about 20 miles by air (indicating an airspeed of about 60 mph), about the right speed for something like a zeppelin, and not outside the realm of possibilities for anything floating on a good wind.

It should be noted that a Japanese submarine fired a torpedo at a US oil facility the night before, and was last sighted heading south toward LA.
