  1. Maybe bio fuel, or coal derived liquid and gaseous fuels. And hydrogen can always be made from water, given enough power from some other source to do it. The cost of all those alternatives is high, so oil prices will have to go way up before most people start buying those other fuels.

I am talking about fuel for portable uses, like cars and airplanes, where coal would not work. For electrical generation, coal works well. And there is MUCH more coal in the world than oil. Only problem is that coal is dirty. Not only does it cause more "traditional" pollution, like acid rain, but it also emits more carbon dioxide than any other fuel.

  2. Bio fuel is probably the best alternative, at this point in time.  However, all alternatives cost more to produce.  That may change as new technology comes along.  Natural gas is also available, not just oil, and natural gas is still quite plentiful.  There is a large supply of natural gas available in North America - we just have to get it out of the ground.  Producing more natural gas, here, in North America, would also make us less dependent on foreign countries for fuel.  Nuclear power is also available.  The problem is that everyone panics at the word "nuclear", but nuclear energy is much cleaner that coal burning plants.

  3. Oil is the only thing that I know is recycled by Mother Earth.Hydrogen is very explosive and the atom is so small it will leak through almost anything.

  4. solar power, nuclear power, electric/battery power, and I think possibly hydrogen

  5. There are tons of alternatives, but even with the high gas prices they are still more expensive.  As oil gets more and more expensive the alternatives might go into mass production and be able to compete competitively with oil.

  6. In order of practicality to replace the very large amounts of oil we use:

    Nuclear, wind, solar, bio fuels.

Hydrogen is not a fuel because it requires electricity to make.  It is a way to move energy from one place to another, like from a power plant to a car.  The above forms of energy are necessary to make the hydrogen.

If we wait to do this until oil gets scarce, or very expensive, the economic impact will be enormous.  It takes a long time to build the alternatives.  We need to start right now.
