Yes of course the time has come when civil engineers are in great demand.

As you know it was a time when people had no choice but to go for civil or elect. or mechanical. Then came the computer and electronics boom.Then most of the technical colleges even closed the civil engg branches. Now as infrastructure boom is there and many highways, bridges, malls, housing projects, airports and so on are under cons ruction and more are being planned. Civil engineers are more sought after due to this scenario.

Lot of prospects for you in India and abroad if you are civil engineers.  Salary and perks may be comparatively less than other streams in engineering.

Do not know what your status is but here;s my take.....

There is and will continue to be a demand for CEs.  In the USA, the infrastructre is falling apart and being maintained by a bunch of old farts nearing retirement.  The rebuild will be by new CEs.  Construction will continue, especailly in energy related fields (coal, nuclear, oil, natural gas, wind and solar).  The oppurtunities aboard are even more favorable.

CEs have always been on the low side in average salaries compared to other areas of engineering.  That is to some extent misleading.  CEs are also some of the highest earners as owners of construction companies, drilling firms, etc.  If you are still in school, I would recommend keeping a broad base.  Take courses outside he CE ciriculum (thermo, fluids, electronics, power electric, etc.) where ever you have interest.  this willl increase your oppurtunites in the world.

Make sure you really want to be an engineer.  The money may look good coming out of school.  The education is a great springboard into the business world and other non-technical professions but if you do not enjoy the work and the thought processes involved, you will be unhappy and believe me your employers will know and you will in all likelihood fail.
