  1. "There are no trains in Nepal, other than the end of an obscure branch line from India which is of limited interest to travellers."

From http://www.seat61.com/Nepal.htm , an excellent resource for rail travel around the world.

  2. The only railway track in operation in present day is Janakpur Railway, a 2ft 6in (762 mm) gauge, running for about 51 km between Jaynagar (India) and Bizalpura. This line remains open, but only the section from Jaynagar to Janakpurdham (about 24 km) is currently served by passenger trains. There is an interchange at Jayanagar with a metre gauge line of the North Eastern Railway of India.

Travelling by train is fun, if you have sufficient time. It has been upgraded to Disel engine now.

The first railway in Nepal ran from Amlekhganj to Raxaul (India), about 48km of 2ft 6in (762 mm) gauge freight only line opened in 1927 and closed in the 1960s.

Personally, I have located several other historic but incumbent rail-tracks in the southern region, including one really long around Dharan/Chatara area.

  3. None
