...Seeing as Iran's nuclear potential is a direct threat to American prospects within the Middle East, Iran has been labeled as a country with direct contacts with terrorist organizations, and the continuation of the current policies toward Iran will plunge the US into an armed conflict?

  1. Actually, any recent attempt to open dialogues with Iran was quickly thrown back in our face.  Then used as propaganda as attempts to infiltrate their government with American spies.

  2. No, there are no reasons we shouldnt have diplomatic ties with them. All the countries we are closest too now have fought us in the past, so we can save a fight by opening a line of communication with Iran.

Without communication with Iran a war with them is imminent, and instead of throwing the first punch we should, if we have to, fight them defensively.

I dont agree with invading countries, i think the only way we should implant ourselves into a country is if that country asks us too.

  3. It's called 52 hostages and 444 days.

    Look it up.

  4. I get your point- talking with Iran might avert hostilities.  Good point.  But you have to remember that the regime that violated international diplomatic procedures (the hostage crisis, remember?) is the same one that's in power now.  In fact, there is credible information that Achmadinejad *himself* was one of the hostage-takers.

With that up front, whom do you think would be willing to take that assignment in Tehran?  Not me.

So, apart from the practical considerations of personal diplomatic safety, what other reasons are there?  Well, there's inertia. No diplomacy with the same country because they're unstable.  We also don't have an embassy in North Korea.  I think the reason we don't have an embassy in Havana is more political than nuclear, but it's so.

With current military activities in Afghanistan and Iraq, should we start another land war in Iran?  I don't think so.  But that's not a reason to open an embassy in Tehran, either.
