Question:

Is there any reason to believe that there WON'T be some major disaster at the end of 2012?

Ok, so I watched this program on the history channel(I almost wish I hadn't) and it made a very convincing case that something catastrophic was gonna be happening at the end of 2012. They examined many different sources ; all of which seemed to have good track records with predicting things(the I-Ching, the Mayans, the Bible, Merlin, some other oracles). I think for the most part, there seemed to be a consensus that there is gonna be some kind of climactic change like POLAR SHIFTS! And apparently science supports this polar change theory. And I live in a coastal state(Atl. ocean) but not a coastal city...but it still scares the c**p out of me to think that i'll probably be drowned. Also, they talked about one of these things predicting something about a black hole and of course scientists have found out that there is a black hole in the solar system. And last but not least(I didn't know this), supposedly the Mayan calendar has been extremely accurate up to this point.

  1. There really is no compelling reason to believe that it would happen at that time anymore than at any other time.  If the calender were so accurate, the calendar shouldn't have outlived them by hundreds of years.

  2. yes there is a reason there wont be a major disaster and there is a reason to believe there will be one. h**l anything can happen.

  3. The History Channel shows have been REALLY BAD lately about presenting some BS in a way that make it look legitimate.

No, there's no reason to believe there won't be a disaster in 2012, just like there's no reason to believe there won't be one tomorrow.  But there's no reason to believe there will be one either (at least, no *good* reason).  The earth is 4.6 billion years old, and there have only been 5* mass extinction events, none of which occur in one single day or even year.

*We're actually currently in the middle of the 6th mass extinction, due to human caused alteration of the environment the extinction rate today is higher than at any time in history.

There is no evidence that a pole shift is going to happen in 2012.  The way pole shifts work is that  the orientation of the earth against it's axis of rotation changes.  This happens VERY slowly, it does not happen in one year, like 2012.  More like thousands of years.  And the only effect that you would notice is that compasses point a different direction than they used to.

Another thing commonly called pole shift is a magnetic field reversal where the north and south magnetic pole trade places.  This is much more common and occurs much more rapidly, but it *does not* correlate to mass extinctions.  This is also not expected to happen, but even if it did, the only noticeable effects in your daily life is that cell phones and radio and anything else that travels through airwaves might not work right while it's happening, and compasses would point the other way.  It certainly wouldn't cause the ocean to swell and drown your state.

There is definitely not a black hole in the solar system.

And the Mayan calendar is less accurate than ours.  Unless you believe in the Mayan religion (do you worship Ahau and the Three Lightning Gods?) then you shouldn't worry about their religious beliefs regarding 2012.  Because that's all it is, the religious belief of a primitive culture.

  4. If there is a black hole then why are all teh planets and moons still in orbit?

I could only say this: They are saying something misleading so people would watch it.

Just like global warming....the earth is SUPPOSED TO warm up..we had just came from an ice age for goodness sakes.

Yet people had been scared by the media that the earth getting worse because of this. Yes sure but this is when eveloution will take place. Of course the air is not good with all the carbon monoxide and dioxide (and the chemicals to let signals travel) but global warming is something that should not be focused on. Surely this is the same case.

  5. Basically, everything you mention is either not true or a gross misrepresentation of truth.

There is absolutely no good reason to believe anything significant will happen in 2012.
