Is there any reason to buy a standard Blue Ray player over a PS3 which has a built in 1080p Blue Ray Player?

I was going to buy a family member a Blue Ray player, but then I started thinking...why not just buy a PS3? They are the same price as the lower priced Blue Ray players, and the PS3 outputs 1080p. I also found a $25 buck remote control for the PS3? What do you think?

The PS3 is as good of a BluRay player that you will find. In most case - better. As the PS3 is constantly updated with new Firmware, the newest versions are always installed. Example, the PS3 originally had BluRay profile 1. If I remember correctly, PS3 Firmware update 1.35 updated it to profile 2.

Correction - PS3 Firmware update 2.20 updated the BluRay profile to 2.

The difference is very minor, something to do with the digital audio output.

i think high end BR players can do a couple more hertz.

But PS3 is much better, especially seeing as it updates as Blu Ray profile 2.0 comes out.

the price you can get a blu-ray player for 330$ not 400 for a ps3 but if this family member likes video games then you should get a ps3

Sony does the same trick as it has done with PS2 and DVD. Back in the days DVDs were really expensive, so as DVD-players - Sony came out with PS2 (it was cheaper than a DVD player) - it gave a huge boost in DVD sales. The same thing is happening with PS3 and Blu-rauy. Sony sells PS3 below it's marketing price (like it was in the beginning of PS2), but it gets it's money from games and Blu-ray sales. I suggest bying PS3 - you get more bang for your buck.

The only real advantage of buying a stand alone blueray player is if you have a universal remote like the Harmony.  The PS3 only works with it's proprietary bluetooth remote which will not work with any popular universal remote.  Other than that there is no difference at all.

You should defiinatly get the ps3. It comes with a remote so you dont have to buy one. Its 2 in 1! You get them a DVD player and a game system. Not just that, more. It has lots of features. If you connect it to the internet then they can play online with people around the world, use a built in web browser, next year download a free virtual world, free demos. Thats not even all of it.

If you get your family member a ps3 they will love you forever :]
