I am currently considering purchasing an hdmi cable off of amazon for about $10. Is there any risk of this cheap cable causing a short and/or starting a fire?

  1. HDMI cable voltages are low voltage and low current - probably similar to network cable (CAT5) voltages.  So the risk of fire is practically nil.

  2. No.

HDMI only deals with very low power electrical current for the purpose of signal transfer.  If the cable did have a short, all it would do is not allow the signal to be sent and received between the connected devices.

There is absolutely no risk of fire or electrocution with a faulty HDMI cable.

If it's a good deal with a good return policy, just buy it and use it.

And to the idiot who gave thumbs down to everyone across the board, I'd like to read your answer if you know better.

  3. Also most cables that you need to hook one electronic to another are very cheap to begin with. Places like Best Buy and Circuit City like to jack the prices up because the average consumer doesn't know any better. There are a lot of sites that sell all sorts of different cables for really low cost. I bought an HDMI/ DVI cable for $10, and it works just as good as the $70 one from Best Buy

  4. As far as saftey is concerned you run a higher risk of electrocution from the hdmi voltage

                                                     LOL!

  5. No they will have had to pass tests anyway ( well in the UK they do and i doubt its different to other places ) so they will be competely safe.

  6. I bought a cable from amazon myself for $5.29, and it works beautifully..the installation people said they are all about equal in the under $50 range...

  7. Since both Devices that  hook up to the HDMI cable are UL listed or CE in Europe, the only risk is to the devices themselves. Even that is a low risk scenario.
