  1. Ok, you also need to make sure that you've unlocked the phone. All carriers lock the phones before they sell them so that only their sim cards will work in it. A lot of people don't know this, then they get overseas, buy a sim card, load it with minutes, and their phone tells them that the sim is blocked. A quick way to tell is to put a different sim into your phone over here. If you've got T-Mobile, stick a Cingular sim in it, if you've got AT&T, but a T-Mobile sim in it and see if it works. Don't try Cingular and AT&T, though, Cingular owns AT&T so it might work anyway. Some phones the companies won't unlock. Siemens made a phone for AT&T that would not function right if T-Mobile sims were put in it. So check on that, too. T-Mobile is generally going to be your best bet on the phones. Mostly because T-Mobile is owned by Duetsche Telecom who runs GSM in Europe. AT&T phones (at least several months ago) were hybrid (I can't remember whether it was cdma or tdma, whichever came later)/GSM so using them on a pure GSM network (like in Italy) won't work. It's best if you're going to buy a sim card to shell out a couple bucks for a phone over there, too. Or just buy phone cards. You can use them on the payphones for international calls or just in Italy. Have fun, Italy is a fantastic place.

  2. In Italy we have 4 mobile carriers. They are - in order of customers number:TIM, Vodafone, Wind and 3.This last one is more oriented to sophisticated multimedial services and I dont recommand you specially for a short staying.

SIM cards of the three carriers are sold in the airport and in the several licenced shops in the city as well.

A new line - excluding special offers - costs 5 euro with 5 euro traffic included or 10 euro, it depends the carrier, the current offer, the promotion of the moment.

  3. I'm Italian, I'm writing you from Rome. Here in Italy you will not find GSM english cards at all!

You'll find only italian companies new cards!

To have more details add some details in your question and I will aswer!
