Hotshoe on my camcorder has been broken and only way to transfer data is thru USB. However all studio software I know like Pinnacle, Ulead etc. read data thru firewire connection and not USB. I am looking some way out to use my USB port to transfer movie data to a software and thus make DVDs.

  1. Your computer OS will be able to read the usb connection, but most camcorders do not allow transfer of video through USB.

    In MS Windows, the camcorder will show up as a drive and you should be able to navigate the camera like a directory and copy the video and photo files.

    In Apple OSX, the camcorder will show up as an ejectable volume.   You can then navigate the camera like a folder and copy the video and photos files.

  2. The usual terminology:

    capture - video STREAM from a playback tape to create a video file

    import - video FILE

    if ur vcam is tape-based & digital, most likely firewire400 connection is necessary to capture video STREAM (usb possibly w/ dropped frames)... the reason why miniDV vcams have/DV ports (see specs/connectors)

    ... but if otherwise, usb is perfect for video FILES transfer from hdd, minidvd, flash media. Most of these vcam types aren't equipped w/DV port:

    AIS is for mounting of video accessories, such as lights & microphones, not for video transfer.
