Mileage has lot to do with your driving skills.. Few tips for having efficient mileage..

1. Don't accelerate immediately..instead press accelerator gradually and drive on a constant speed.

2. Don't brake hard...when u see a red light from a distance, release accelerator, this will slow down your vehicle.

3. Don't change frequent gears..and try to drive at top gear on highways.

4. Get your car serviced at regular intervals to keep engine fresh. Also, have the air filter clean.

5. Do switch off your car's engine when running idle.

gas mileage can be improved with the weight difference in your car... If you have any unnecessary items that could be weighing your car down, like a bowling ball, take it out. Also the aerodynamics  make a difference also. Riding with your windows down causes your car to use more gas while driving on the highway... It's just like running with a parachute, it requires more effort right? When on the highway, use your AC. When in the city, roll down the windows, and turn off the AC. AC also burns gas, but not as much on the highway as it does in the city.

Drive at constistant speeds (use cruise control often on highway)

A start from a complete stop will cost more gas, like at stop lights. Instead of having a lead foot and slamming on brakes in the city, try coasting a couple hundred yards before braking and creeping up to the light so that when you get there, it's already green and no unnessessary gas consumption. Also.. when taking off ramps, lay off that gas pedal a bit and coast before reaching the ramp and while on ramp. If you on the highway often, this will help.

Also, unessessary braking is included when tailgating and driving crazy in general... (weaving through traffic)

If you want to add parts, maybe a cold air intake for better combustion in your engine.

heres a little story...when i got my car i was getting about 15 mpg...now I'm getting about 27...change the spark plugs, wires and distributor cap and rotor...try using a cold air intake...use at least 87 gas no matter what year your car is...use a good fuel additive at least every other fill up...change you oil at least every 5000 miles and there is a oil additive called Lucas and it works wonders...i swear if you can get better mileage this is how... maybe even try a less restrictive exhaust system... good luck
