Say someone had enough money, time and space for such a comittment, and would be willing to research as much as needed (obviously) and get whatever permits they needed. So are there any types of small primate that would make a good companion?

  3. The problem with having a primate pet is that they tend to act like humans.  Which can include temper tantrums, throwing stuff, fighting, ect.  They can also very easily pass on or catch diseases that infect humans.

  4. No. All primates require company all the time and not just when you can be there. They need a troupe to belong with. Without such a troupe a monkey or ape will feel insecure at all times. Just one other animal (or person) is not enough. Without the troupe structure they will become more aggressive and will tend to bite, screech, urinate and defecate in more inappropriate locations and even become a danger to themselves. Many cases of self-destructive behavior involving biting or scratching themselves until they begin to bleed profusely are due to the extreme loneliness companion monkeys often experience. There are exceptions to the rule but largely these exceptions belong to large households with plenty of other animals such as cats and dogs or even parrots with whom they can form social and play bonds. Primates should never be kept as companions and that is a key to their successful care in captivity. They need to be part of a family or community and their needs definitely must be high on everyone's priority list.

Diseases can be a problem but mostly it goes one way. We pass on diseases to them more frequently because there are so many more of us and we go out into the world and pick up new ones everyday. We can battle most of them but they are foreign to most other primates and medical care for nonhuman primates is expensive to say the least.

The best way to love primates is in their natural environments or in excellent captive zoo environments.

  5. Monkeys for pets = bad idea
