  1. There are 50 states (and 54 testing jurisdictions).  Each one sets it's own critieria for sitting for the exam.  Many states will allow you to get credit for sections taken in another test (it is the same exam), but the process can be tedious.

    To get to your state, you can use the info at www.nasba.org.

    It's been over 20 years since I sat for the exam.  The state I'm in used to let you qualify to take the test if you had either an Accounting Degree or work experience.  Now they have dropped the latter (you still have to work as under a CPA for at least a year before you can be licensed, but you can take the exam immediately after graduation) and have bumped the education requirements to a 5 year degree.

    Some states still have the work substitution--eg, Oklahoma lets you sit with 30 hours instead of 36 hours of accounting courses if you have 1 year of relevant experience.


  2. The CPA exam is a uniform exam.  That means the requirements are the same for all 50 States.  You only need 150 hours of College to take the exam.  Work experience is not a requirement.
