Is there any study or reliable source out there that suggests you need to be intelligent to be funny?

I doubt it.

Some people are gifted with a natural flare for witty remarks and they wouldn't know where Oxford was!

There are educated people who are as thick as two short planks. Intelligent people know the difference.

You don't have to be.  But if you want to get beyond toilet humor and be funny to people based on real life and the way it is, it takes a level of intelligence.  You don't have to necessarily be educated, but being bright and understanding social situations helps!

Comical styles differ greatly upon intellect. Though intelligence is not neccissary when comming to humor, ask yourself, would you rather hear a political joke or a p**p joke?

Don't get me wrong, I love p**p jokes, but a few comedians like Lewis Black, Ron White, and Steven Wright share a unique comical style that most can't match without their level of intelligence.
