Question:

Is there any treatment for PCOS?

My sisters and I all have PCOS with varying degrees of severity. We all suffer from mildly excessive hair growth. My sisters periods and fertility have been affected, but mine hasnt (I have two children). One of my sisters has hair loss problems. We are all quite severely overweight although I am not sure that entirely because of our PCOS.

We are all on weight loss programmes already, but is there a definitive treatment for the condition?

  1. I agree with Didi, a gyanecologist can help but an endocrinologist deals with the underlying hormonal issues which are causing the problems. There isn't a cure but there are ways of managing the condition. I have tried different combined pills and they have masked the side effects but that's all. There are natural options such as chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture, reflexology and homeopathy, and I can tell you that they do help, and without the more severe side effects that I went through on other medication.

Weight loss is the major issue. It's harder for us with PCOS, but it helps more than most other things. Diet and exercise are the key. Cutting down on fats and sugars stops the androgenic activity that causes the hair problems (excess AND loss) and the acne and weight.

Doctors try to regulate the periods of PCOS women, as that does help, so options are basically combined pills which are low in androgens such as Marvelon, Mercilon, Yasmin and Dianette (though they affect women in different ways).

Ask to be referred to an endocrinologist and discuss these things.

  2. PCOS is no fun, I would know. I have 4 older sisters and we all have it. You need to see an endocrinologist. They are the best ones to help you. I use to work for one and I started to get seen by one of the doctors there. It really helped. Start by talking with your gyno about referring you to a an endo. Endo will run some test and get you started on what pills you need.

  3. Hi hun, the treatment for PCOS depends on the severity of the symptoms, birth control pills can be given to regulate your periods, medicines to combat the male hormone and clomphene to treat infertility, this is a serious condition, you run the risk of developing diabetes and high blood pressure, all the things you are doing now will help with the symptoms, good for you for trying to loose weight your on the right track because this will help towards you not getting some of the above, hope this helps hun and good luck. x

  4. Metformin.
