Question:

Is there any turbo that doesnt require premium fuel?

I was wanting to get a turbo for my Impreza but the only thing holding me back is premium gas prices because with a turbo you are required to buy premium gas otherwise you engine will knock, right?

If that's true I was wondering if there is any turbo that doesnt need premium gas (it can be aftermarket or comes with a car). I heard that the Chevy Impala SS turbo doesnt need it but I cant find anywhere that says that.

Anyways thanks for the help.

  1. It is not the turbo that designates the need for higher octane fuel but the total compression ratio after adding boost.   If you are too worried about having to spend the extra .20 per gallon you don't really need a turbocharged car.

  2. The new hyundai genesis coupe's 4 cyl turbo verison will not.

Apparently it lets you "choose" to run 87 octane or 93.

If you run the 87 octane you will be getting less performance in the form of horsepower and torque though. But yes it will still run.

Also you can get any turbo car really and have a water/meth injection system installed and tuned, and if you really want you can have it tuned to run on 87 octane.

  3. Tuning a turbo car to run on 87 octane to save a few bucks on gas and get lower performance doesn't make good sense. Why have a turbo and then cripple it to save money?
