I'm working on a science project for which I am creating an electromagnetic buzzer. I have several types of solder here at home and they are not labeled. I was wondering if it is possible for any type of solder to be ferrous, preventing it from helping me in my project?

  1. None that I'm aware of. Alloys of tin and lead are most commonly used because the tin-lead system has a very low melting point at virtually any ratio. Any binary, iron-containing system would need to be extremely dilute in iron in order to have a reasonably low melting point, in which case I don't see why you'd even bother adding iron in the first place when lead and tin fit the bill.

  2. It's called a welding stick. LOL.

But seriously, solders are usually low melting point alloys with Brazing being some what higher. Welding involves the fusion of metals so is the highest temperature of all. About the only thing you can say about solder is that it will be non-magnetic. It might be possible to produce a glue that has iron in suspension (I have seen some Aluminum used in this fashion) but it's hard to see much use for it.

  3. no, there is no iron in solder.
