Question:

Is there any volunteer activity that my 8 year old and I can engage in together for an hour every fortnight?

I want to encourage volunteerism in my child while making her aware of others less fortunate than us. Is there something we can do together every 15 days or so? Something like reading to the sick/old, or helping in a food bank maybe...ideas on what and how to go about this would be appreciated.

  1. I wish I were familiar with the Area in which you live.  I just want you to know that this is a very sweet, thoughful and worthwhile activity you are proposing.  A win, win, win!

  2. try volunteermatch.org

I would also suggest foodnotbombs.org...where you cook a meal, bring it to the location, and feed needy people....you can come as often as you like and it is usually held once a week....a good way to meet people and help out.

  3. If your child isn't allergic or afraid of animals:  check the local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or animal shelter.  They often need help just grooming, cleaning or loving the animals.

If you already have a pet, and it has a personality that is conducive - see if you can take the pet to the sick/old folks' home.
