Question:

Is there any wax or compound out there that will make my fishtail pipes look brand new?

I purchased a great looking pair of Fish Tail Tip exhaust pipes for my motorcycle. But there is one little problem, they have a few eye sores, some discoloration, small scuff marks, and a small patch of what looks like burnt plastic or rubber maybe from someone shoe or boot sole. And I would like to know what is the best way and or product to use that will remove these small imperfections on my pipes?

  1. Tripoli and white diamond buffing compound, and a vertical buffing wheel...the type that fits on a medium speed grinder.

Cut the scratches out with the tripoli, and then polish to a high shine with the white diamond... you can also go the extra mile and get a bar of carnuba and finish up to protect it after you buffed it.

You can also get a smaller version of a vertical buffing pad for a dremel if you have one of those... actually, dremel makes a metal polishing kit that sells at most walmarts for around 20 bucks, comes with the compounds, buffing pads ETC...all you need to have is the Dremel itself. It will take a little longer given how small the buffing wheel is, but it will buff out everything you are talking about.

As far as the plastic or rubber, it should scrape off with your fingernail... but the Dremel will take it off if all else fails...might dirty the pad beyond usage though.

After you buff it out, grab a can of neverdull and keep it around to keep your chrome in tip top shape, it doesn't just polish and shine, it actually pulls everything out of the metal and cleans it as well, the more you rub, the better it shines.

As long as none of your scratches are all the way through the chrome, they will buff out.

(P.S. always clean the metal completely after each step, and never use the same pad between compounds....other wise its the same as using the tripoli for each step because it will still be there, and don't let the pad dry out, keep compound on it and keep the buffing wheel moving so you don't stay in one place too long)

    Good luck!!!
