Question:

Is there any way I can find my horse's "lost" papers?

I bought my horse about 5y/o and at the time we didn't care about papers, because I was a begineer and didn't really show. Supposedly he had AQH papers, but how do I find them?

Sadly, he has no brandings or tatoos. I have NO idea who his parents are and he came with the name Little Big Man but it may not be his registered name.

So, am I hopeless or is there anyway I can find his papers. Here is a picture...

  1. Talk to the Association that registered your horse. (and the previous owners if you have not done that)

p.s.- you have a very pretty horse. =)

  2. I would contact http://www.aqha.com/ and see if they can provide you any assistance.

  3. I don't know much about this stuff, but I would guess you could contact the association he is registered with and try to figure something out. Or contact the person you bought him from and see if they can help you. Good luck :)

  4. I love the way you said "begineer," it's so Piratey.  Boy, do we have the saddle for you!!!   (ARRRRR)

Just kidding, I know a typo when I see it.  LOL.

Your best bet will be to work backwards through prior handlers and owners.  It is not an easy thing to do with a horse that has changed hands several times.

If he is a QH type, you may try the APHA registry as well, and as them to search their records for a hit on that name.

It's quite a task.  But good luck!

  5. I would begin with the people from whom you purchased your horse.  They may have raised him or know who did or can at least give you the information of the person who they bought him off of...keep going back, keep a good log of all of the information that you can gather.  If you can get just one solid piece of information on either parent, you can then have that horse's offspring researched and by process of elimination, find what you need to know to get his papers.  Then, just order a copy of his papers, along with a couple of blank transfers and when you receive the papers, find who the last owner of record was and get a transfer signed by that person to you, send in that transfer along with the papers and you have a registered horse in your name.  Good luck, be persistent and you just may get those papers.  The younger he is, the easier it is going to be to track back to his origin.  Just don't limit yourself to AQHA, he could be a solid paint or some other breed.

  6. you will need to contact the person or yard you purchased him from and hopefully if it was an individual you will have to find his parents name, then you will need to file with the AQHA.

  7. There really is no way other than to contact the prior owner and go from there. Owners make more money when they sell a registered animal, so the papers are transferred at the time of sale.  When that doesn't happen, there are several possiblilities. One is that the horse could be registered, but no one bothered to apply for it.  The others are dishonest and include that the horse is grade and you were lied to, or the past owner was trying to pass off a different horse as being the one registered and using the papers that way.  Another is that the horse is stolen, or was sold in a dispute where another party retained the papers.  Good luck....
