Question:

Is there any way around the "Birthday Rule" the insurance companies use to determine primary coverage?

The birthday rule is used to determine which plan is primary and which is secondary. Under this rule, the plan of the parent whose birthday occurs first in the calendar year is designated as primary. The date of birth is the determining factor-not the year-so it doesn't matter which spouse is older.

  1. This is interesting, I've never heard of this and have worked in insurance for 10 years now.  What state are you in?

  2. This  has been in effect for many, many years.

It's the month and day of birth, the year doesn't matter.

There is no way around it.

  3. I have never heard of this, we run both peoples credit and whichever ones is better we use them.  The credit score does affect the premium.

  4. The way around it, is to drop the person off of the coverage that you don't want them on - so there ISN'T any secondary coverage.

  5. The only way around it is to drop you from the policy you don't want as primary, leaving you with just the other as primary.
