I'm trying to learn more about an adoption case. My fiance was adopted and knows the last name of his real parents, but online is there any way that I can find out about the case?

  1. Not on line.  However, depending on the state in which he was adopted, he may be able to access his original birth certificate, and possible other information from the adoption file.  If was adopted in Alabama, Alaska, New Hampshire, Maine, Oregon or Kansas, he is entitled to receive a copy of his original birth record, just like non-adopted citizens.

As Possum pointed out, you can check the following link for information about the laws in other states here:

Just click on the name of the state where he was adopted.

Possum also gave you great information on registries and support, as well.

Also, if he does have last names, he may want to check with Ancestry.com.  (You can get free membership for 2 weeks.)   If he was born in one of the states that has an online birth index over at Ancestry.com, he can use the birth index to possibly gain first names to aid in his search.

  2. It really depends which Country or US State the birth and adoption took place in as to how much further info you can get.  If you edit your answer to say where this took place you will get more accurate answers.

With names you could try this free site:

or netdetective is quite good if you know the state and approx age of the person.  You have to subscribe though.  I have access to this one if you want me to do a look-up for you, no trouble.

Your fiance might also like to look them up in the City Directories held at the library of the town where he was born (assuming of course his natural parents were from that town) and find their address and occupations at that time.

There are literally thousands of people searching and finding each other, despite the antiquaited sealed records.  Some look for reunion and others just want information and the truth of their origins.  This is their right and don't let anyone tell your fiance otherwise.  The best bet is to find a group of experienced people who offer support and search help.

Best of luck to you both.

  3. I doubt specifically you'll find anything about the case.

In fact - if you're in the US - most states seal up - for life - all documents pertaining to all adoptions.

So you can't even get the info from the courts - let alone on-line.

As far as searching goes - here are the places I suggest to start the search process - if that's what's he's after -

(If he was born somewhere other than the US - add more details to the question in an edit.)

First - add your details to the registries here

    http://www.isrr.net/

    http://registry.adoption.com/

Check for information on your state records here -

    http://adopteerights.net/nulliusfilius/?...

Check here for search help - and links to search angels -

    http://www.adoptioncrossroads.org/

And check here for any support - it's the best online forum for adoptees I've found -

    http://www.adultadoptees.org/

All the very best with your search.
