I have 2 adult corn snakes that have recently bred and laid eggs. I put the eggs into a damp incubator. But can i tell if the eggs are fertile before the hatching period?

  1. Are they chalky white? Almost marshmallow colored? if so then they are almost definately fertile.

If they are yellow, they are slugsI(infetile)

A great site to check out is

    cornsnakes.com.

You will find a wealth of info there for your egss and anything else you may have questions on.

Good luck to you and your babies.

  2. When the eggs are layed, you should be able to see a small embryo. It would be a little yellow/orange circle. The egg starts to white over and solidify not long after being laid so if it's been days or weeks and the eggs are still solid and white, they should be fertile. they will start collapsing and becoming yellow and probably grow mold if they are infertile.

  3. when it is dark in the room take a flashlight turn it on and look at the eggs...if there are red looking veins in it they are fertile.  snake eggs shouldnt be turned so its best not to pick them up when you do this.  also they look plump if they are fertile.  they usually kind of get dents in them if they are infertile.

  4. I agree with the other poster, you can tell from their outside appearance which are fertile and which aren't. Normal healthy eggs will be white and quite a wide oval shape. Bad eggs will be yellow and very thin, and you need to throw away any that look like this.

  5. Healthey eggs are plump and white in appearnace, Infertile eggs tend to be off white, a kind of yellow colour. Also if you shine a light to them in a darkened room you should see veins in the fertile eggs, infertile eggs will not have developed these veins inside.
