  1. Yes there is!

Heaps of people who are only just beginners at racing, race there bikes stock standard and at the lower levels of racing can do quite well.

There are basic things that can really make a difference and it can be as simple as running the bike with the right tyre pressure and making sure your chain is tensioned right.  As proc has stated a clean oil filter is a must.

There are a number of web pages that give hints on basic maintenance and tuning that you could have a read of. On site is motocross-racing-tips.com

Also ask a few of the riders who have the same bike that you have a few questions about settings on the bike as that is how you learn what is best for the bike you have

  2. A well oiled chain can add 1 BHP from a rusty old one.

In truth though mate, you need to spend money.

  3. Yes, making sure the normal things are right. as with any engine it needs to be set up right. all the power comes from the explosion inside the engine. (internal combustion ) to get this you need the right amount of fuel and air mixture. to get this you need to get your carb or fuel injection system set up right. either jetting or mapping.

you also need to set up your air intake (don't ever underestimate the work your air filter does) most people have problems due to air filters. simple to fix easy to overlook.

then there is the spark. making sure the timing and strength of the spark is also crucial. to early or weak will result in power loss. and then there is lubrication. keep your wheel bearings well lubricated and clean( in fact keep everything clean ) friction causes heat and heat costs time.

basically the answer is pay attention to detail. every little part is there for a reason. and with bikes the reason is to go quick.
