Is there any way to block my kids from accessing a neighbor's open wifi?

We would like to put parental control software on our system, but it seems moot if they can just connect to an open wifi.

  1. If your kids can access your neighbor's wifi then most likely it doesn't have a sensible security system. Go to your neighbor asap and tell them to put a password on their system and keep it firewalled and secured.

  2. Do what rk23 says or throw your there computer in the garbage.

  3. yeah, its called discipline =]]

give em a slap if they break the rules =D

no, but seriously have a word with the neighbor to set up a passkey (wep/tkip/wpa) on his wifi router to lock out your kids

  4. Talking to the neighbors like other people suggested is good. Another option would be to download software to the childs computer to restrict what sites it can go to. You can also limit how much access the child has to the computer so he can't change settings of parental controls.

A few good free parental programs can be found here

  5. Another software you could try is Application Blocker Pro.

  6. try talking to ur neighbor to put password for their wifi

  7. Put a password on YOUR computer and don't give it to them so they can only use it if you're around and log in for them. If they have their own account, just remove their ability to use internet explorer (or other browser) from the browser's permissions.. Remove the wireless card (or turn it off depending on the type of computer) so they can only connect when they are physically wired in (to YOUR network). If you know which neighbour it is, ask them to password protect their system as your kids (meaning other people as well) can get in to their network and there may be security issues.

I'm not really familiar with parental control software (other than the basics) because I"ve never used it, but I believe if you are restricting internet or specific websites it will apply to ALL connections, whether wireless or wired in, as it blocks it at the computer level rather than the  broadcast level.

  8. the only way to stop that is to either uninstall the wireless card from your kids' computer or talk to your neighbor about putting a password on their network though i have to wonder why you want to keep your kids off the internet.

  9. You can block websites and set levels in your pc Content Advisor:

First you want to go to the web site that you want to block, and in the upper Address bar: RIGHT click the url > select copy.

In your Internet Explorer browser go to TOOLS> Internet Options > tab CONTENT > frame Content Advisor > button SETTINGS

At this point you will encounter request for Administrator password (IF one has been set)

    Enter the password if required

    or create a password.

Do this to set approved and UNapproved sites:

    1. On the General tab you can manage your password and other limitations. Make sure that you select a password that you will NOT ever forget, and something your other users will not ever guess.

    2. Next select tab APPROVED SITES

then RIGHT click > select PASTE to enter the URL for the site(s) you want

    and then click

    button NEVER.

    3. Also, to increase the content guard select tab RATINGS

Select all that you want blocked and set the slide more to the right for higher security.

If you later determine your setting is too strick, you can always reduce it,

    OR

you can copy URLS and set them (like above)

    to ALLOW.

Copy and paste these instructions into a WORD document, and keep them so that you can remember how to go back and adjust the settings as you like in the future.

    ^j^

  10. tell your neighbor that your kids are connecting to their wifi and get them to put a password on it. but why worry?? its free. haha just kidding
