Is there any way to connect my belkin wireless router to the phone line in a student flat?

The phone line is owned by the building. I want a way that my other 3 flat mates and I do not have to pay £150 each for broadband and can use my private router... Please help

  1. Assuming that you go in together and purchase broadband access, then you can connect the router to the modem and share the connection.

    Before you do, check with other students in the building, especially your neighbors on each side. If they are already doing this, you might be able to share with them.

    An important point, no matter if it's just 2 of you sharing.

    You all need to agree to a schedule that limits your downloading activities to certain times, your gaming to another time block, and general web access to it's own time. This way, no one person hogs bandwidth.

    It's when you have a couple of people gaming and another trying to download, while another surfs the web you have problems, because you have exceeded the capacity of your system and every one suffers.

    If you use your own router, make sure to secure it. Otherwise your neighbors will soon be using it for free.


  2. Routers are not used with phone lines they are used with cat5 cables. (high speed internet not dial up)
