what i want to do is, record some VHS tapes onto a DVD, but i don't have a DVD recorder, therefore i need to use the computer, is there anyway i could plug the VCR into the computer and record the film onto the computer and make it into an video clip file

Yes, there is.

You can buy a USB-based video capture card for your PC (unless you have one already). They cost about $50.

They come with s/w to create MPEG or DVDs.
