My daughter is turning four next week and I am so afraid at the thought of her getting those four year year old shots. She isnt going to understand but I have tried to explain that it will hurt a pinch. She is such a cheery and happy little girl..doesnt mind the doctor...but Im afraid after these shots...she will be more reluctant from now on. Anyone had to deal with these feelings before?

  1. She still takes her cues from you. If you don't freak out, she won't freak out as bad. She may whine a bit, but give her a dose of tylenol(sneak it into her food or drink if she's antimedicine) beforehand. It'll help manage any pain. As to you freaking out cause she needs the shots, well, it's for the best in the long run. Would you rather have to see her in the hospital with some weird symptoms, on a ventilator or something equally bad, or watch her get a pin prick that takes all of two minutes and is the lesser of two evils? You've probably had her immunized before, so you know she's most likely not gonna have any reaction. And take her out for a treat afterwards, whether it be ice cream for lunch or to the toy store to pick out a toy for being such a brave big girl. That'll soothe both of you, especially if it's ice cream ;) Good luck!

  2. Yes my daughter just turned 5 there was no 4 yr shots?? She got her 5 yr shots the other day for kindergaredn. I think I took it harder than her! It's sad cause they are old enough to know whats goin on, but then they forget about it an hr later! Just give tyenol and promise her a toy or special treat after the visit , only if shes a good girl!! Good luck!

  3. Not sure what shots she gets at 4 my son didn't get any shots at his 4 year checkup but he got the MMR booster for kindergarten last year at age 5.  Tylenol right before the appt seems to help some but they will still feel some pain.  My son just used an ice pack on it afterwards lol.

  4. I was also really worried about my daughter having to get her shots for kindergarten.  My doctor had some numbing cream she put on her.  We had to come in about an hour early and they put the cream on and wrapped it her legs in saran wrap.  It actually helped .  She didn't feel the pokes at all.  she still felt the burning with a couple of the shots and she didn't like that, but I don't think there is anything they can do for that.  She was much calmer because she had that stuff on and knew it would help her not to feel the needles.  You would have to check with your doctor to see if they offer that.  good luck.  I hope this helps

  5. Be calm! If you're afraid of her being afraid, she's going to pick up on that. It's just going to make her more uneasy.

Kids are a lot more perceptive than we give them credit for. Just act like they're totally no big deal, that everyone gets them done and it won't hurt much at all (because shots really don't). If you're chill about it, she will be too. You're her role-model, after all :)

  6. Hi. I have worried about this also. I would recommend giving Panadol or Nurofen about half an hour before she has the shot. I've also read that if children have a hit of sugar at the time of injection, they don't notice the pain as much. Maybe you could try a lolly of some sort of really sugary drink???

    HOpe this helps
