My husband got a grease spot on my baby's birth certificate and it looks disgusting.

  1. Because it is an extremely valuable document, I would be tempted to let a professional handle it.  I'd probably search the web under "documents restoration" or "documents cleaning" or look in the phone book to see if anyone local handles cleaning of documents.  You can also try contacting the county office where the birth was originally recorded and ask for a copy, but it probably will be marked "copy."  You can, of course, scan the original into computer software and remove the grease spot electronically, which could produce a copy neat enough for display, but won't be acceptable for any legal purpose.  Anything you try on the original runs the risk of making things worse, so this is probably the time for professional help.  Once the document is restored, I'd invest in some "page protectors," (plastic covers which keep spills off of original documents).

  2. I'm afraid you'd spend more trying to restore it than it would cost to replace it.  I think I'd just send off and get a new one.
