Question:

Is there any way to get the company to pay me more money?

When I started with the company over a year ago I was hired in at $6 and that was fine; I jsut needed a job. So a yr later we have our spring evals and raises (this is my first one). My manager at the time is not the same one that hired me (ive been thru 4 store managers). I got a 5% raise which is the highest supposedly so that was 30 cents. I come to find out that new hires are getting hired in at about $7-$8 and got a raise on top of that even if they hadnt been there very long. Is there anything I can do to get more money without being promoted to management. I want to make at least what all the other people are that are in my position (even though I have more experience and skills than them)?

  1. Talk with your manager about it, thats about all you can do...Good luck...its hard to do right now.

  2. The best way is to ask. Be sincere, explain that you really like working for the company and ask what you can do to earn more. BTW, 5% doesn't sound like much but it's above the average raise.

  3. Kidnap the manager and hold him for ransom, let's say $9 per hour. You may have to hold out for a while though, by the sound of it, managers at your company are highly expendable.

  4. Ask your manager to reconsider an increase to bring you up to the new hiring wage.  It is not unreasonable for experienced workers to get at least as much as new hires.  If they are still unwilling to give you the raise, you might have to consider looking elsewhere for work.  How did your evaluation go, by the way?  Where you an excellent employee, or did they give you a bad evaluation?  If it was an excellent eval, possibly you can even quit, and then reapply - if hired, they would have to give you the higher wage..  However, you should have another job lined up before you try that tactic, in case it backfires.

  5. ask your manager for a raise
