  1. If you want to see what type of RAM is supported by your computer, go to http://www.crucial.com and run the system scanner.

It will show what type of RAM, how much RAM, and answers any other questiong you might have while giving you all the details about you RAM capacity. You can also buy the RAM from there if you're interested.

    Hope that helps.

  2. Yes there is.  RAM is packaged in small PC boards that are about 1" x 4" that plug into the motherboard of your computer.

What kind of RAM depends on the motherboard, and the motherboard also dictates what the maximum amnt of memory your computer can support.

To find out the details, go to www.crucial.com and run their scanner.  It will identify exactly what memory modules will work with your computer, and also what's already in your system.  It's usually better to install matched modules.  For example, two 512Mb chips is better than one 512 and two 256.

You will want at least 1Gb for XP, and 2Gb for Vista.

  3. Increasing the RAM is the quickest and cheapest way to get more speed out of your desktop computer. I never changed the memory sticks in a laptop, so don't know about it. RAM or Random Access Memory, is the actual memory on which the computer operates. It comes from one or two "memory sticks," or little cards with memory built on them. They aren't free, and if you don't know what you have, you obviously can't do much about it. If you don't know what RAM is and how to put it in, you need to have this done by someone who DOES know how.

Run a complete computer analysis with this free scanning utility:

    http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

You download and install this, then run it and print the results. It tells you EXACTLY what is on and in your computer and whether or not you can install more RAM. You need to do this first before you take any other action.

  4. Yes, you buy more RAM.

If the RAM slots are full then you can get a bigger RAM chip.

Your computer will only work with a certain amount of RAM and no more.

Chances are though, that you do need more than you currently have.

As to cost, no one can say without knowing which computer model you have. There are may RAM sales websites you can go to to answer all your questions.

  5. It depends on your computer...if you have a fairly advanced computer it is possible to add additional RAM to your motherboard, however some cheaper motherboards are completely filled...You can still replace this RAM with larger quantities of RAM.  First you need to find out what kind of RAM your motherboard can take, just google the specs on your computer model if it is from Dell or HP...Then see if how many slots avalible for RAM you have, then you can go to NewEgg.com and buy RAM from there for about $75-100 depending on the speed and amount of RAM you buy.  In my opinion its well worth it to get faster RAM.

  6. You can go to http://www.crucial.com and use their memory advisor to find out what kind of RAM (memory) your computer needs. They can even test your system and tell you what you need and have in the computer (each slot).

You can get cheap memory at http://www.newegg.com or http://www.tigerdirect.com
