Is there any way to link two PC's, one using Vista, and one using XP, with a crossover cable?

I've been searching for days running into either dead-ends, or answers that are way above my head. This was quite simple to do with just XP, and now I'm stumped. The ONLY thing I need to be able to do is transfer files and play LAN games between the two PC's.

Run the network setup wizard on both machines. Give them both the same network name. Give them different computer names.  Let them choose their own ip addresses. After you run the wizard, share at least one folder in each. In the vista machine share the public folder. Im still running into trouble trying to share anything else in vista. After you do that go to the programs menu in the vista machine (on the right) and the xp machine will be in there. Just click on the icon. Run a search for the xp machine for the vista machine. When it comes up click on the icon. When you do that the vista machine will ask you if you want to allow it. Click ok and it will configure the connection. You said you had a crossover cable. There is a difference between a ethernet cat 5 cable and a crossover. Be sure its a crossover.

Yes there is a way to do this and it is not hard. So firs, on the XP computer go "set up a home or office network" Turn all features on and name your workgroup such as "home". Once you do this you will be prompted to restart you computer. You are now done with the XP. Now go to the vista computer. Go to system then to advanced system settings. In the computer name tab click the "change" button. Change the workgroup name. It MUST be the same as the one you entered on your XP computer. Click OK and restart the computer. Then go to network and sharing center and turn all features ON except pasword protected sharing. Restart both computer and you are done.
