Is there any way to make a coaxial cable thinner to fit under a closed window like taking off some insulation?

I thought maybe I could take some of the insulator off a Coaxial cable like just the rubber just to make it thin enough to get under a window without letting air in or out.

  1. Flat coaxial cables are sold.  I was lucky and got a few extra from my direct tv installer. I found a site that has them.  Go to www.maxxelectronics.net and look up FLEXIBLE FLAT COAXIAL CABLE #94.  That is what you need.  They cost around 4 bucks a piece.

  2. There is nothing you can do without affecting the signal receiving ability of the cable. If you remove anything or compress it, you affect the impedance of the wire, leading to ghosting and other effects on the TV picture. Stripping the insulation will also allow moisture to "wick" into the inner insulation. Better to file a groove into the window frame, or better still, drill the wall and pass the cable through that.

  3. If it is your house, just drill a hole. It will make life easier. If not, ask your landlord for permission, but should not be a problem. Holes are very easy to fill up later if needed.

  4. No do not remove any of the outside covering of the coaxial cable, this causes leaks in the system which will downgrade the quality of your service.  I would also suggest not running the cable into the house through the window, but if you have to, I would suggest using a heavy towel bunched up and laying it across the entire window sile and closing the window on the towel, this will keep air from blowing in and will not harm the cable.

  5. Michael is right. If you HAVE to have thinner cable find a custom installer that carries Planet Waves cables and ask him to make the cable you need. He can make it verry quickly and it is about 1/2 the thickness of standard RG6 coax.
