Question:

Is there any way to repair damaged threads in a crank arm?

Even though my crank extractor wouldn't fit, I managed to remove it with the aid of my crowbar. However, as I am selling it on Saturday, is there any way I can get the threads repaired? And if so, how much would it cost? Thank you.

  1. you'll need a tap and die. I don't know what size or thread count you need, but they're available at hardware stores.

  2. I assume you are talking about the thread in the centre of the crank arm which is used to pull it off the axle, if you have stripped this, it is almost certainly un-repairable, there will not not be enough metal left to stand recutting with a tap, and the taps are not readily obtainable, in any case.

If you refit this crank, you will have to hope it does not need removing again.

If its the pedal thread you have damaged, most bike shops will have a tap for this and may recut it for a price, sometimes ok, depends on how bad it is.

Then, again, if its the left hand crank arm, they are only about £8 to £15 new.

  3. I am afraid you are out of luck with this. Sorry.
