  1. You didn't ask your question very clearly. Like someone else said, use your breaks. What are you asking? You can stop the bike while your in fifth gear if you want as long as you hold the clutch.

  2. You can just pull in the clutch lever while braking. However it is not a good idea to be at a standstill when not in gear. If you need to get out of the way you should be in first at a stop to be ready. Lost time is crucial in a life saving moment.Plus to start off you need to be in first gear.BE SAFE!

  3. use your brakes i would think but if all else fails crash it lol

  4. well if your brakes happen to not work... and your clutch lever or cable also fails... and the throttle just happens to be stuck you could always hit the kill button.... or you could turn the fuel petcock to off if your kill switch is also broken... if the k**b for the fuel petcock breaks off after all this you could pull the spark plug wire off...  If that doesnt work you could try sticking something into the chain or front spokes....

  5. Pull in the clutch lever and apply the brakes.

Turn off the key, or hit the kill switch.

Let the engine slow you down.

  6. Yeah. Pull in the clutch and use the brakes. You should be in first before you stop to pass the license test here in California. You can downshift through all the gears with the clutch pulled in at one time. Just keep going down. Better get some lessons.

  7. i want to know the same thing

  8. Aim it at something big like a wall or 18 wheel truck usually stops it in a hurry.

  9. I would recommend using the brakes. Also, shifting into neutral is technically not a dwon shift.

  10. emmm.. brakes? the lever on the right... and the pedal on the right....

  11. You can hold the clutch in and then use the brakes. But you will have to down shift when you want to go again.

  12. Hold ya clutch in and brake using both front and rear brakes, but after stopped you are in the wrong gear to take off again so really learning this serves little purpose.  Even in a panic stop when this is more likely to take place, it would be wise to downshift so you can giddy up out the way if someone is not ready to stop behind you, etc.

    Happy riding and stopping!

  13. 1) Pull in clutch

    2) Apply brakes

That wasn't so hard was it??

  14. you got brakes -------------d**n

  15. I have found that pulling the Clutch lever and Squeezing the Brake lever works well.

  16. Use the handbrake?

Do you mean while you drive on the road?

An engine will always slow down regardless, until is hits the point where the idle rpm is the same as your driving speed.

And pulling in your clutch will slow you down less than braking on the engine. If you do down shift too many gears and let go of the clutch, you will over rev the egine and most of the times the engine will destroy itself which is good for braking too i suppose.

  17. yeah its called brakes

  18. Putting both heels on the ground Flintstone's style also works pretty well...

  19. A lot of confusing answers so far.

Downshifting allows 'engine braking'.  If you downshift and then let out the clutch, it slows the bike down and saves on brakes.  If you're going downhill it keeps you from having to brake all the time, so it keeps your brakes from heating up and 'fading' (though this isn't so much of a problem with disk brakes).

Also, motorcycles have transmissions where you have to go down through the gears to get back to first.  In a car you can just go directly from top gear to first, but not on a bike.  So if you just pull in your clutch and stop, you still have to get back down to first to start again, and this is sometimes hard to do with the bike not moving.  So when you come to a traffic light you usually shift down to first, even if you're not letting out the clutch for engine braking, just so you'll be in neutral or first when you start again.

  20. run into a wall

  21. Pull into some dense bushes.
