Is there any way to stop my cat from playing in the water bowl?

My pets have a communal water bowl and my cat, Jynx, loves playing in it. He sticks his paw and arm in the bowl then splashes the water around getting the water all over the floor.

What can I do to get him to stop?

  1. I really don't know but that is soooo ADORBALE !

Hehe, that's just soo cute :)

  2. give it baths and let it play in it let him enjoy his self

  3. My cat is seven and he still does this :)

  4. my cat alway's plays in her water bowl. She loves putting flowers in it and floating things. They are having fun. Let him go.

  5. My cat Ariel does this. I haven't really tried to stop her but it was a problem for a while because she would constantly empty the bowl and/or tip it over so I got one of those automatic fill bowls with the water container attached and now I don't have to fill it a million times a day. Other than that as already suggested a water proof mat. You don't want to bother them with it too much though if you scare them or disturb them too much everytime they drink you will train them that they are doing something wrong which can lead to bigger problems.

  6. Nothing.  But  that's a perfect name for a cat with that type of personality, Jynx.

I would suggest getting  a colorful bathroom rug  and place that under the bowl, something that matches the decor of the room, and let him have his fun.  He's not hurting anyone, he's healthy, and it's only water.

    Don't cry over spilled water!!!

    Meow!!

  7. Put some large, smooth rocks in the bowl to spoil the fun and reduce splashing.  You might also put a couple inches of water in the bathtub for him to play in.  Don't be surprised if he starts singing, humans aren't the only ones to enjoy the acoustics of the 'shower'.

  8. Good luck with that...when you do let me know?...LOL

You can lead a cat to water but cant stop him from splashing around

  9. He's a cat, therefore, practically impossible.  What you want to do is to lay a good-sized piece of carpet---preferably thick but not nappy--under the water bowl.  That way, he will be able to continue this amusement without making a mess.

  10. No, there is no real way to get him to stop. That is just what cats do.

They do have bowls with weighted bottoms though that he may not be able to tip but most cats play with water at least a little. Also metal bowls might be more attractive because of the reflections so try a different material if you're using metal right now?

Or just try putting a waterproof mat down I guess?

  11. I have a cat who does the same exact ting I'm not kiddding first he puts is paw in the water and splashes it around making a hee-uge mess on the floor but this is just natural for him and he is just having a bit of fun

  12. When you see your cat playing in the water address this with another toy for the cat to play with......

Cat Nip toys are great for kittens and Cats with alot of energy to spare - the Cat NIp will drive them nuts and give them pleasurable play - usually lasting long enough for them to come get a drink and leave to find a nice place for a nap.

  13. I don't know if this is the case but depending on the bowl and cat, most cats stick there paw in the water dish because they can't see the water. Some cats are not the most graceful and tactful at finding out if there is water in the bowl. Once they find out, they don't like there paw being wet so they start shaking it instantly  and usually gets themselves more wet and the floor wet. Also suggest finding a bowl that is heavy and does not move around much such as a dog dish. I had this problem before. I also put a night light over there dishes and the reflection of the light seems to help.
