Is there any way to temporarily make a member "Read Only"?

you can make it so they cant post-

locate member in the members list. below their ID click Edit Membership- scroll to bottom page Posting Messages:    Override: This member's posts are not moderated (Edit)<-- click the edit-

bottom next page you can choose to moderate that member or check   This member can't post messages. click save changes

when doing that latter, members tend to then leave the group in a huff
